Katerina Rohonyan prevailed against the higher-rated Natalia Zhukova to join 2008 U.S. Women's Champion Anna Zatonskih in advancing to round two of the Women's World Championship. (Nalchik, Russia, August 29-September 18)

Rohonyan tied her mini-match against Zkukova at the normal FIDE time control, but won the rapid match 1.5-.5. Her rapid game against Zhukova featued a drawish knight vs. bishop endgame- the tides began to turn after 49...f5?! which allowed Rohonyan to create a devestating outside passed pawn.

On Sept 1-2, Katerina Rohonyan will face Inna Gaponenko, while Anna Zatonskih plays the #8 seed, Tatiana Kosintseva.
