|Nakamura, Shirov and Carlsen Win Again in Corus|
|January 18, 2010|
In an exciting day at the Corus super-tournament, the rich got richer. GM Alexei Shirov maintained his lead by winning over GM Sergey Tiviakov while GMs Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura glided to 2.5/3.
Our US Champion and World Team board one gold medallist has definitely impressed so far in Corus. Today's round was no exception, as Nakamura prevailed with a quick win over GM Nigel Short in the Najdorf. GM Peter Svidler and Jan Gustafsson, when commenting on the Internet Chess Club live broadcast, were both particularly impressed by 19...e4, since it was also tempting to just increase his advantage slowly. Hikaru also finished in style with 41...b3!
Shirov is off to an incredible 3-0 start.
The #1 ranked player in the World, Magnus Carlsen won today against GM Loek Van Wely:
Tomorrow features a big match-up for Hikaru Nakamura: Black against Vishy Anand. See the full schedule of pairings here.
GM Varuzhan Akobian drew today against Wesley So in the "B" group, while Ray Robson drew against Maria Muzychuk in the "C" group. Ray was in clear first in the C section prior to this round, and after this draw, he'll be tied for the lead.
