Kathy Wing (1953-2005)

Former colleague Kathy Wing succumbed to cancer after a long illness. Players and organizers alike appreciated her work on Tournament Life Announcements while she was advertising manager in 1999 and 2000.

Although she had no interest in chess in particular or games in general, she was always conscientious in dealing with tournament directors and organizers. She held both a bachelor's degree in biology from Cornell University and a master's degree in English composition and literature from the University of Buffalo. In addition to her work with the Federation, she spent many years teaching biology and English. She also contributed articles, mostly about animals, to various magazines and newspapers.

Kathy was always willing to help any human or animal in need. After her work for Chess Life, she served as the adoption committee coordinator of the local SPCA in Western New York for several years, finding homes for many stray dogs and cats.

Kathy is survived by her husband, former Chess Life and School Mates editor Peter Kurzdorfer, and their beloved pets.
