Edward Cary Lafferty of Waltham, Mass, one of the most active players in New England, died on Thursday, June 5, of lung cancer. Ed had competed in nearly 400 USCF-rated tournaments since his very first one on Feb. 24, 1995, at the Waltham Chess Club. Besides being a member of the Waltham club, Ed was also a regular participant at many tournaments at the Boylston Chess Club in Somerville, Mass., and the Metrowest Chess Club in Natick, Mass. He was a big supporter of tournaments sponsored by the Massachusetts Chess Association and competed in Mass. Opens (state championship), Mass. Game/60 events, Greater Boston Opens and Pillsbury Memorials.
