The University of Maryland Baltimore County won clear first at the Pan-American Championships in South Padre Island, Texas (December 27-30). The team earned a perfect 6-0 score, dominating what was expected to be a tight competition. They defeated the only other teams with an average over 2500, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Brownsville. Last year they tied for first with University of Texas at Dallas's "B" team, but lost out on tiebreak.  Members of the winning squad were GMs Leonid Kritz and Sergey Erenburg, IM Giorgi Magevelashvili, IM Sasha Kaplan and WGM Sabina-Francesca Foisor. Two key wins for the UMBC squad were Kritz's battle against Gareev of UTB and Erenburg's win over Ludwig of UTD.
