Lenderman Fifth in World Junior!
November 3, 2009
GM-elect Alex Lenderman tied for third at the World Junior Championship in Puerto Madryn, Argentina with 9/13! Alex placed fifth on tiebreak.  His result was marked by a late tournament surge of 4/5 including round 12 and 13 wins over GMs Falko Bindrich and Eduardo Iturrizaga. The streak was only interrupted by a round 11 loss to GM Maxime Lagrave-Vachier of France. Maxime ended up winning the tournament over GM Sergei Zhigalko on tiebreak. Here are two of Lenderman's wins from rounds 9 and 10.

The other American in the tournament, US Junior Champion and GM-elect Ray Robson, finished in 18th, but he had a solid 2552 performance rating. He also won some nice games like the following one against GM Yu Yangyi of China.

There was a three-way tie for first in the girls section in order of tiebreak- Soumya Swaminathan of India, Deysi Tello Cori of Peru and Cemre Betul Yildiz of Turkey.

More games coming soon. Lenderman was recently featured on the cover of the October issue of Chess Life Magazine, and in the US Chess Scoop below.
