Ray Robson Earns Final GM Norm!
October 11, 2009
RayRobsonlead.jpgU.S. Junior Champion Ray Robson earned his final norm at the Pan-American Junior Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay! He racked up a perfect 7/7 and drew his eighth round game on October 11 to clinch the title. See the official website here. Also check out an article on Ray's success (in Spanish, including a nice chart of Ray's progress).

This third norm comes just in time for Robson's 15th birthday on October 25, making him the youngest-ever GM to play for America!

CLO will update you on the conclusion of those checking the record books: Italian-American GM Fabiano Caruana clinched his norm at 14-years old and 350 days, which makes it a real nail-biter between him and Ray. Fabiano officially plays for Italy, which further complicates the comparison.

Ray's first norms came at the Arctic Chess Challenge in Norway and at the 23rd North American FIDE Invitational in Chicago. Robson will be playing in the World Cup later this year (as a wildcard) and the 2010 U.S. Championship (seeded as US Junior Champ), so fans will have a plenty of opportunities to root our newest GM-elect on.
