Helmuth Knapp (1924-2009)

On March 31, 2009, Helmuth Knapp of Washington, DC passed at age 84. Born 1924, in  Essweiler, Germany, the son of Jakob Knapp and Luise Blauth Knapp. Immigrated to the U.S. with his parents at the age of four. Graduate of Grover Cleveland H.S. in Queens, New York. Knapp graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in Manhattan in 1950. He was a loyal and generous suporter of Cooper Union.

Helmuth served honorably in the United States Navy 1943 to 1946, Electronic Technician's Mate First Class, on the USS Scott (DE 214). Had a distinguished career as an Electronic Engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration in the VORTAC Program Branch, TACAN Program Section, retiring in 1980 after serving as Technical Assistant to the Chief Navigational Aids/Communications Engineering Division.

Helmuth was an avid chess player and a member of the U.S. Chess Federation between 1989 until 2007.
