At the SPICE Spring Invitational (March 16-22, Lubbock, Texas), 17-year-old Robert Hess has clinched first place and earned his second GM norm, with a fantastic 7/9 score. The tournament is a double round robin, so there is still one round to go. The other star American junior in the event, Ray Robson, has 4/9.

The decisive game for Hess's norm was a win with Black over Timur Gareev in round seven.
