The Cleveland Scholastic Open is back for its 3rd consecutive year and will take place on Saturday, October 18th, 2014!

This event is organized by the Delta Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and will be held in association with Invest in Chess, a chess advocacy initiative ( This year, the Cleveland Scholastic Open will be held at the Metro Campus of Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.

This year, two young chess masters from New York by the names of Joshua Colas and James Black will be coming to participate in the tournament, interact with parents and students, and to inspire many young children to continue playing chess!

Joshua Colas began playing chess when he was seven years old and became the youngest African American Chess Master in history at the age of eleven in 2010. Joshua holds a plethora of accolades to his name, including that of being a six-time National Champion as well as the New York State High School Chess Champion.

James Black began playing chess at the age of 8 and has since then risen to prominence in the chess world. His accomplishments include winning three national chess titles in a span of three years, namely 6th through 8th grade.

There will be five rounds in this tournament and a variety of sections (rated and unrated) so everyone can participate. Don't miss the opportunity to meet the two National Masters from New York and to play against players from all across the state of Ohio. And, just like the past few years, awards will range from job internships and college scholarships to e-readers and gift cards!
