Murray M. Stern (1911-2009)

Murray M. Stern, a former longtime USCF member from Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Garden City, N.Y., died on April 5, 2009 in Sarasota. He was 97.

Mr. Stern was born on May 24, 1911 and graduated from New York University and the Harvard Business School. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served as an officer during World War II. In 1946, he moved to Garden City to conduct his business of manufacturing infants' wearing apparel. He made a name for himself in the garment industry, inventing blanket sleepers for infants.

While a resident of Garden City, he taught chess to local children for more than 20 years. Among his chess activities was being chairman of the chess team at the Harvard Club of New York. He traveled to international chess tournaments, including the 1972 Fischer-Spassky world championship match in Reykjavik, Iceland.

He retired to Florida in 1992. He is survived by a son, Michael R. Stern of Riverton, N.J.; a daughter, Frances M. Goldstein of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and several grandchildren.
