Chess players in and around the Philadelphia metropolitan area may like to test their skills in one of Southern New Jersey’s biggest chess tournaments.

The 3rd Annual Greater Pitman Chess Championship, organized by All the King's Men Chess Center in close cooperation with the Pitman businesses, is being held on August 14 at the Pitman Memorial VFW in Pitman, NJ, just a few short blocks away from the downtown shopping and restaurant district.

“The tournament has gotten bigger and bigger each year”, said Stephen Dick, tournament organizer and chief TD, “so much so that we’ve changed venues in order to accommodate the even larger crowd we’re anticipating for this year’s event”.

This year’s tournament format is different than in prior years. There are three sections (Grand Prix, U1700 and U1000 Scholastic) instead of one section as in previous years and the prize fund has been increased 25% from $2,000 to $2,500.

In the top two sections there are a total of 12 place prizes, four class prizes and two biggest upset prizes. While the U1000 Scholastic section has trophies going to the top four finishers as well as a medal to the top K – 3rd Grader.

Previous Pitman Chess Championships included grandmasters such as Alex Lenderman and Michael Rohde both from New York, International Master Bryan Smith of Philadelphia, and Cherry Hill, NJ Life Masters Leroy Dubeck and Michael Katz.
