Former World Champion Smyslov, 1921-2010

The seventh World Champion, Russian Grandmaster Vasily Smyslov died on March 27 in Moscow at the age of 89. He was born March 24 in Moscow. Smyslov became World Champion in 1957 after defeating Bovinnik in a match, and he lost the title back to Botvinnik a year later. Smyslov was known for his positional chess style, endgame skills and his baritone singing voice.
