JOHN PETER CARVALHO [March 30, 1925 - February 11, 2010] Born in the British Colony of Hong Kong as Joao Pedro de Carvalho, John was the youngest of four children of Duarte de Carvalho and Maria Botelho. Following in his chess champion father's footsteps, John taught himself chess as a teen, and won the Colony Chess Championship in 1953 and 1954. He emigrated to the United States in 1955, and won the Bank of America Chess Championship in 1965. John resided in Los Angeles County for 34 years, where he was married and raised two children, Lisa and Brian. In 1989, John moved to Orange County's Seal Beach Leisure World, where his warm-hearted nature and skill made him an avid and beloved member of the Duplicate Bridge Club. John is survived by his loving children and their spouses, his dear sister Ina Brodsky, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Obituary submitted by his daughter, Lisa Carvahlo.
