Chess Without Borders Hosts Haiti Fundraiser |

With their school surrounded by snow, the children at Barbara Rose Elementary in Barrington, IL were thinking of a faraway place. On February 6th Yury Shulman’s Chess Without Borders hosted a tournament/fund raiser for Haiti open to players of all ages.
Fundraising chairs third graders Rishi Narayanan and Kyle Shuff oversaw food sales between games. Much of the food was donated from Bertacchi Builders, INC and besides the usual pizza, hot dogs and candy, included fresh pasta dishes and fruit. Shuff said they chose to have the food sales benefit Haiti because “of the devastating earthquake and they (the residents of Haiti) lost everything.” Narayanan said he felt that the money should go to relief efforts simply so those in Haiti could “have the same basic things that we do."

The boys had hoped to bring in $2,000.00 to donate to the Red Cross Haiti fund. They walked the halls with a basket of cookies hoping for last minute sales. Unfortunately, the final total was only $400.00. Despite the disappointing total, eight-year-old Shuff says that volunteering is about helping people. In that vein, every bit helps.
