Ernest N. Wright (1920-2009)
Ernest N. Wright, a USCF member from Randolph, Vermont, died late Saturday night, December 5, 2009, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He was 89. He was born October 27, 1920 in Duluth Minnesota, the son of George I. and Elizabeth Wright. He came to Brookfield, Vermont in 1972 from Cambridge, Mass., moving to Randolph in 1978. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in Guam during World War II. Mr. Wright received a master's degree in architecture from the Harvard School of Design. He was an architect for the Architects Collaborative in Cambridge, Mass. and taught architectural design at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and at the Vermont Technical College in Randolph before he retired. He joined the USCF in May 2009 - playing in his first rated tournament on May 30, 2009 at the Hanover Chess Club in New Hampshire. He also enjoyed woodworking, collecting and identifying wild mushrooms, and playing the recorder. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Wright of Randolph; four daughters, Dinah Collins of Hingham, Mass.; Jessica Wright of Braintree; Vt.; Sarah Wright of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Judith Wright of Burlington, Vt.; six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held December 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Randolph. Day Funeral Home in Randolph was in charge of arrangements.
