Robert C. Johnson (1961-2009)
 
USCF life member Robert C. Johnson of Bemus Point, New York, formerly of Fredonia, New York, died August 5, 2009 - 16 days before his 48th birthday - in Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo, New York, following a brief illness. He was born August 21, 1961, the son of Carl Eric and Harriet (Carlson) Johnson, and grew up and lived most of his life in Bemus Point.

He graduated in 1979 from Bemus Point Central School and then attended Jamestown Community College and Rensselaer Poly Tech before graduating from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1983. Mr. Johnson was a former computer programmer at Crawford Furniture in Jamestown and at DFT Communications in Fredonia.

A Class A-rated player, whose USCF rating peaked at 1990 following his finish as runner-up in the 1994 Jamestown City Championship, Mr. Johnson had competed in many New York state championships over the past several decades. His high point came in 1997, when he finished first in the Under 2000 section of that year's state championship in Saratoga Springs. He was also registered as a FIDE player with an ID of 2034069. In addition, he directed tournaments or assisted as a TD for the Chautauqua Chess Association up until late 2006. He attended both the Westfield Chess Club and the Jamestown Chess Club. He also taught chess at the Jamestown Boys and Girls Club.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of three years, Ginger Lee Spiller Johnson. Burial took place in Oakland Cemetery in Warren, Pennsylvania.
