Milas W Lebedovych

LTC (ret) Milas W. Lebedovych, MD of Savannah, Georgia, died unexpectedly and peacefully at his beloved summer home in Accord, New York, on July 19, 2012.

Milas graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1958 and the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1962. Milas served in the US Army and earned a Bronze Star Medal for his service during the Vietnam War. At the time, Captain Lebedovych was in the Medical Corps, serving with the 19th Engineering Battalion, 18th Engineering Brigade. From May 1966 to June 1967 CPT Lebedovych was the battalion surgeon at Cam Ranh Bay. Following the war, Milas returned to civilian life and completed his psychiatric residency at Lafayette Clinic in Detroit in 1972. Milas began his medical career as an emergency room physician, later specializing in psychiatry. He practiced in various correctional facilities, psychiatric centers, maximum security prisons and in the military. In 1983 he returned to the military. Milas's military career highlights include earning his Airborne Wings, Expert Field Medical Badge, and the Meritorious Service Medal in the late 1980's. He served with distinction in support of Operation Dessert Shield and Dessert Storm in 1991. Milas retired as a Leuitenant Colonel in 1996.

Milas was an avid chess player and was a member of many chess clubs. He was also an accomplished long distance runner and active in various Ukrainian organizations.

At the time of his death, Milas was employed by MHM Correctional Services, Inc., within the Georgia Department of Corrections, as a board-certified psychiatrist. He leaves behind in sorrow his wife of 44 years, Zwenyslawa Salak. Also in deep mourning are his son Orest and daughter Andrea, with her husband and their two sons. Funeral services were held on July 24, 2012 in upstate New York. LTC (ret). Milas W. Lebedovych, MD was laid to rest with military honors.
