Fifteen Grandmasters played in the third annual Michigan Chess Festival, held in Dearborn from October 23-27. GM Carlos Matamoros of Ecuador won the 9-round 5-day tournament on tiebreaks with 6.5/9. 

Others tied for first included GMs Alexander Ipatov, Yury Shulman, Mackenzie Molner, Anton Kovalyov, Aleksandr Lenderman and Eugene Perelshteyn.

Bryan G. Smith earned his third GM norm in the event, finishing with 6/9 (check out his FIDE graph here, showing a peak rating of 2503). He won a key game with black over GM Timur Gareev.

Gareev, one of the highest rated GMs in the USA, was recently featured in the Chicago Tribune for his continued blindfold chess tour.
