After five rounds of the Candidates tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk, Viswanathan Anand leads with 3.5/5. He started off with a Ruy Lopez win over the top rated contender, Levon Aronian.

Close behind are GMs Peter Svidler, Levon Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik with 3/5 each. This double round robin event determines Magnus Carlsen's next challenger, in a World Championship match later this year.

Svidler lost in round 4 to Aronian but rebounded today with a victory over Topalov.

In the final position 48.Bd8! is important because 48.Rd7 immediately allows ...Kg6 Bd8 Rxd8. After 48.Bd8 Black resigned because now ...Kg7 49.Rd7+ Kh8 50. Bf6#
