Former World Champion Smyslov, 1921-2010

Vasily Smyslov died on March 27 in Moscow at the age of 89. Smyslov became World Champion in 1957 after defeating Bovinnik in a match but lost the title back to Botvinnik a year later.

Andrew Hubbard Wins World Amateur

Andrew Hubbard of Illinois won the World Amateur Chess Championship with a score of 7.5/9. Along with the title goes the first place prize of $3,000, the FM title and a scholarship to TTU. Fan Yun won the Women's title on tiebreak over Anu Bayar.
