UTD B and UMBC Tie; UTD Takes Trophy Print E-mail

University of Texas at Dallas's "B" team tied for first with University of Baltimore County in the 2008 Pan-American Championships (December 27-30, Dallas, Texas). UTD took the trophy for their stronger tiebreaks. Check final standings.
In addition to the two co-champions, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Stanford University will join the Final Four. 

In the final UMBC vs. UTD B showdown, GM Leonid Kritz won on first board against IM Jacek Stopa:


IM Salvijus Bercys saved the day for UTD on fourth board, defeating WGM Sabina Foisior and winning the top prize for fourth board to boot.

The Final Four of College Chess will be held April 4-5, 2009 at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). UMBC Chess Program Director Alan Sherman warned, "With IM Sasha Kaplan (Israel) joining UMBC in January, UMBC will have an even stronger team for the Final Four."

The Stanford University team placed fifth, but there were two UTD teams in the top four, so Stanford made it into the Final Four.
