August 16, 2009
America sent 23 players and four coaches to the Pan-American Youth Championships. (August 16-22, Mar Del Plata, Argentina.) WIM Alisa Melekhina is the only American representative playing in a mixed section! See the official website here (Spanish), with live games, pairings and information.* The tournament is a nine-round Swiss, using most of FIDE rules, although the organizer decided at the last minute not to impose the draconian rule that being even one second late would result in forfeiture. Under 10 competitor Simone Liao reports on arrival in Argentina with her family, including her brother, who is also playing.

It is currently a mild winter in Argentina with temperatures in the 60s during the day. Check CLO for more news this coming week as the competition heats up.
