Despite drawing two Blacks in a row in the first two rounds of the Tal Memorial (Moscow, August 18-29), Gata Kamsky wasted no time in rebounding from his first round loss against Vassily Ivanchuk , scoring a Slav victory over Alexei Shirov today. After achieving a big initiative after 29...f4, Gata played a series of accurate moves up to gxf2+, forcing a winning endgame.

It was the only decisive game of the round. Gata now stands in the middle of the pack, just behind leaders Kramnik, Morozevich and Ivanchuk. He faces Boris Gelfand with White tomorrow.
