Defending U.S. Champion Alexander Shabalov began the 2008 Frank Berry U.S. Championship with a shockingly short loss to Alexander Yermolinsky when Shabalov blundered on move 18. The two Grandmasters were pictured chatting at the players' meeting , but clearly a friendly game was not in the cards.

Shabalov played 18...Ne7?? here and resigned in view of 19. Nxd5, winning instantly due to 19...Qxd2 20.Nxe7+ Kf7 21. Rxd2 Kxe7 22.Bc5+

Watch the rest of the games live on Monroi.com and look for a full report on CLO later tonight.
