The weekend ahead, January 15-18 features two major chess tournaments on both coasts: The Golden State Open and the Liberty Bell Open. Look for reportage by f-pawn Michael Aigner from Concord and for US Chess Scoop interviews from Liberty Bell participants.

Meanwhile, GM Hikaru Nakamura will start duking it out with the likes of Carlsen, Kramnik and Anand in Corus 2010. But Hikaru is not the only American to watch in Corus- GM Varuzhan Akobian will be playing in the B section while our newest GM Ray Robson will be in the C-section. The first round begins on Saturday, January 17 at 7:30 EST. Follow the action on the official website or the Internet Chess Club, where CLO editor Jennifer Shahade will be hosting the first round commentary with GM Gregory Kaidanov.
