My Coach is the Best Because....
Kids, do you think that your chess coach is the best? The USCF believes that all coaches are the best. They are mostly volunteers who love the game or teachers and parents who can see the educational benefits of learning this game. We would like to recognize every coach individually. That's just what our Coach's Spotlight will do.
Write a 150 word essay that tells us what your coach does for your club and why your coach has made the club the best. If you have any pictures of your coach or your club that would be great. Then the U S Chess Federation will recognize these wonderful people on our website.
Gabriel Boyd-Missouri
Mr. Gabriel Boyd is our school’s chess teacher and he is the best. I say he is the best because he has brought a small chess team up to a state champion status. He is also trying to get a job with the city to teach chess to everyone in the metropolitan area. He came to McKinley Classical Junior Academy five years ago (that's in Missouri). In his first year, three students wanted to play chess and he said that he liked chess, and he would start a club. The club grew from three to twenty to fifty, until this season when nearly one-hundred and sixty students wanted to join and Mr. Boyd was only allowed to have a little more than sixty. When he started practice we didn’t have that many because he had other duties/clubs. Mr. Boyd loves chess and when we had practice he made them excellent. He has made the practices tiny tournaments so we play our top strength. Mr. Boyd shares his chess knowledge with everyone he can. He spends hundreds of hours helping us with chess. Also he spends tons of money making sure we have the right equipment. We have won at least first - third place in almost all of the tournaments this year. He led us to take first place in all of our qualifying areas in state championships.
