Rules and Conditions for The 2007 Denker Tournament of High School Champions

Rules and Conditions for The 2008 Denker Tournament of High School Champions

1. The tournament shall be played during the 2008 U.S. Open in Dallas, Texas. Registration shall be required at the Denker Reception-August 2, 2008, 5 PM. See General Information for Playing Schedule.

2. Each state shall be allowed one Representative. Alternates may be substituted as the official Representative. If there is an odd number of entrants in the tournament, the Chairman of the Denker Committee may allow the host state to enter an additional qualified player. The additional player may not receive any prize monies. Should the state affiliate fail to respond to the notice for this tournament, the Denker Chairman may determine the candidate from that state. Only first Denker qualifier played in will be used. Representatives must be residents of the state they are representing.

3. All players must be under the age of 19 on September 1 of the year in which the tournament is held, and have been enrolled, during the previous spring, in the 9th through 12th grade of a school located in the state they represent. Home schooled students who are under the age of 19 on September 1 of the year in which the tournament is held and who have never attended college on a full time basis prior to June 1 of the year in which the tournament is held, are eligible to represent the state in which they reside. Proof of eligibility shall be the responsibility of the players and of the state official certifying the Representative or alternate.

4. Players shall be required to play all six rounds of the tournament. Failure to do so, without notifying the TD personally, will result in a forfeiture of expense monies.

5. Player shall be required to furnish the TD with a legible and complete score sheet.

6. Players shall be required to furnish the TD an emergency phone number of a parent/guardian or other responsible adult.

7. Players are responsible for their own travel and hotel expenses.

8. Players, who complete the tournament, shall receive a travel stipend of at least $100. Additional monies may be added depending on the number of players.

9. The prize fund shall be $2,200 divided into five scholarship prizes:
1st Place: $800, 2nd Place: $500, 3rd Place: $300, 4th Place: $300 and 5th Place: $300. These monies shall be paid to the players by the U.S. Chess Trust , but only upon receipt of proof of enrollment in a college, trade or technical school.

10. The winner of the tournament shall be titled the Denker High School Champion of Champions. In case of ties, co-champions shall be recognized.

11. A scholarship from University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) will also be awarded. Details to be announced soon.

12. It is the goal of the Denker Committee to have all fifty states and the District of Columbia represented. Consequently, we strongly encourage each state affiliate and the District of Columbia to hold a High School Championship tournament to determine its champion. Failing this, rating or some other criteria may be acceptable.

13. A high school champion in a state that has no state affiliate of the USCF, should contact the Chairman of the Denker Committee who is currently:
Dewain Barber, 524 S. Avenida Faro, Anaheim CA 92807 (714) 998-5508. AmChessEq@aol.com.
