Position after 8. Re1

Previous Next

The theoretical continuation here is 8 b3 Ne4 9 Bb2 Nxc3 10 Bxc3 Be4. In this line, White gets his dark-squared bishop to a useful post. Gurevich's 8 Re1 is more difficult to understand, as Black can stop e2-e4 with the natural 8 ... Ne4. The idea for White is 9 Nxe4 Bxe4 10 Bf1, allowing 10 ... Bxf3 12 exf3, when the rook will be nicely posted, or if Black does not exchange, then 11 Nf3-d2 is the followup. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
