Position after 25. e5

Previous Next

An impressive break! Gurevich is basing this on 25 ... dxe5 26 d6, as White would easily get his pawn back on 26 ... exd6 27 Qxd6. Or 25 ... Qxe5 26 Bd4 with dangerous threats against the Black queen, although I don't see anything better than 26 ... Qg5 (26 ... Qh5 27 Bf3) 27 Be3 Qe5, but I would not be surprised if White has an improvement here. Black can still meet 25 e5 with 25 ... Nfd7, although White has really benefitted from this transaction. I believe that 24 ... Nc5 may be a mistake; 25 ... Qxe5 is a critical variation. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde!
