Position after 7. d5

Previous Next

The pawn on d5 is protected either by the c3 knight or by the queen if Black captures on c3 (White will recapture with his bishop). This is the holding power of the maneuver with Bd2. But White is still a tempo down the regular g3 lines where this formation develops. Clearly Black should now play 7 ... f5, holding his grip on the e4 square. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
