Position after 5... Ne4

Previous Next

A much less common alternative to 5 ... d5. By exchanging knights, Black takes the sting out of an idea like d4-d5, but he is wasting time. Shaked appears to be taking a long time over his reply to this. One line is 6 Nxe4 Bxe4 7 Nd2 Bb7 8 e4, occupying the center. This, however, gives Black counterchances with 8 ... Qf6!. The main line is 6 Nxe4 Bxe4 7 Bf4 followed by the quiet e2-e3, when White has a very slight bu quite clear advantage. deFirmian's plan may be to try to get a quick draw in this type of line, and then take White into game 4 tomorrow.
