deFirmian judges that it is more important to trade off White's more-active bishop than to keep the bishop on e7 as the permanent guardian of the pawn on d6. The exchange of minor pieces makes it harder for White to find tactical play on the queenside, bringing the position that much closer to equality. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde!
