Position after 43. cxb6

Previous Next

A little thing to note is that Black cannot now play 43 ... gxf3?? 44 bxc7 Re8 45 b6 and White wins. But White did not have to trade c-pawns now, and the question is whether he would get anywhere by later playing c5-c6 instead. Then White could work with the idea Rd5-d7, and the knight could still come around to c4 and possibly menace a sacrificial Nc4xb6 at the right moment. I would conclude that White may as well have held off on the trade of the c-pawns just yet. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
