Position after 24... Bd7

Previous Next

Benjamin determined that he does not want to allow White's rook to gain access to d7, as in the variations 24 ... Rfe8 25 Bxe6 Rxe6 26 Rd7 or 24 ... Bxd5 25 Rxd5 Rbd8 26 Rad1, so the question was where to move the light-squared bishop. I'm not sure of the reason why he preferred the square d7 itself, rather than f5. Also, apparently Benjamin avoided the capture 24 ... Nxe3 25 fxe3, figuring that White would increase his grip on the light squares with a later e3-e4. But Black still has to be wary that White will simply now play 25 Bd2, and the knight on g4 is functionless. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
