This is the key defensive move, stopping Nf3-e5, and enabling Black to kick back the attackers soon. Instead, Kasparov played the horrible 7...h6? against Deep Blue and 8 Nxe6! gave W a strong attack (game 6, 1997). (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde!
