Position after 37... f6

Previous Next

IM Ben Finegold: 37...f6 An odd move. Walter decides to trade rooks on his own terms and to solidify his position. Now Joel can go into the King and Pawn endgame, but maybe avoiding it is safer. The old saying "All rook and Pawn endgames are drawn" comes to mind. Note that 37..Rxe4! wins...After 38.Kxe4 g6! black wins by force. Main line is 39.h4 f6 40.Kd5 Kd7! 41.b5 h5 42.gxh5 gxh5 43.b6 f5 and wins. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
