Position after 14... Nc6

Previous Next

The timing on this really works, as 15 g5 fails to 15 ... Nxd4. Thus, the d4 bishop is driven back. Meanwhile, 15 Bxf6 Bxf6 16 Qxd6 would be weak for White - one continuation is 16 ... Rd8 17 Qa3 Nd4. deFirmian's choice is between 15 Be3 and 15 Bf2, but 15 Be3 invites 15 ... Na5! Therefore, it seems that 15 Bf2 is more likely (although unfortuantely for White, it blocks the f-file), and then Black can still think about 15 ... Na5, although 15 ... Rd8 is safer. Benjamin has achieved a nice opening. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
