Position after 13. Ng3

deFirmian does not waver from his normal style. This move not only frees the c3 knight from the defense of e4 (enabling a possible trip to b5 with the knight), but White is also ready to play g4-g5, now that the Black knight will not be able to travel to h5. Also, White can get in the move f4-f5. This is all encouragement for Black to mix it up in the center with 13 ... cxd4, even though there will be complications regarding the defense of d6. For example, 13 ... cxd4 14 Bxd4 Nc6 is one way to try to get the focus back into the center. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde! Not all questions can be answered, but the Grandmaster will pick selected topics to cover live from e-mail received.)
