Position after 42. Kd1

Previous Next

w42 Time to take stock. Black no longer had any compensation for his pawn, and he spotted an interesting rook sacrifice, and would be happy with a draw from this defensive sacrifice. Now after 42 ... Qxd4+ 43 Ke1 should win for White, but another prosecution of the attack is 42 ... Qf3+. Then 43 Ke1 Qg3+ gives possibilities for both 44 Ke2 and 44 Kd2. Also, even 43 Be2 is possible - 43 ... Nc3+ 44 Kd2 or 44 Kc2. In short, the variations are mind-blowing, and overall, Benjamin was probably well-justified in taking this risk. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde!
