To lend more support to the e4 pawn, possibly by dropping the e3 bishop back. Looking back, it seems that White may not incisive enough in meeting 6 ... e6. He could have dispensed with 7 h3 and tried 7 Qd2 O-O 8 O-O-O Ne7 9 e5, basing his play on a wedge with the pawn on e5. It would not have been necessary to play h2-h3 for this, as ... Nf6-g4 could always be met by Be3-g1. In the above line, White gives Black d5 for his knights but tries to shut the rest of Black's army in. (Have a question? Ask GM Rohde!
