deFirmian is not afraid of the forcing 8 ... d5 9 e5 (if WHite does not create this wedge, there is literally no point to White's f-pawn being on f4 after any pawn exchanges) Ne4 10 Nxe4 dxe4 11 Ng5, and White's d-pawn is safe while Black's pawn on e4 is in big trouble.
