1278 Chess Enthusiasts Compete In 2004 National High School Championship
Dallas, Texas - April 16-18, 2004

Hyatt Regency DFW Hotel located at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport was the site for the US Chess Federation's 2004 National High School Championship. Daniel Rensch of Mesa, AZ and David Justice of Franklin, TN tied with 6.5 points for the K-12 Championship. Although Daniel won the tie-break for the bigger trophy, it was decided that as a result of David’s outstanding chess play with a rating of 1800 awarding both a Four-year, full tuition and fees University of Texas at Dallas Scholarship was well- deserved! Marc Furhman from UTD presented the scholarships.

Other Sections and their champions were:

K-12 Under 1500: Cameron Bishop of West Haven, CT scored 7 points.

K-12 Under 1200: Christopher Schmidt of Flint, MI and Thomas Reams of Lawrence, Kansas were co-champions with tied score of 6.5. After the tie-breaks system was implemented to determine who gets the larger trophy a coin toss is usually the last resort but due to the overwhelming chanting of “Blitz…Blitz….Blitz” by the audience, the players agreed to play a game of Blitz (speed chess). The result: Chris received the bigger trophy!

K-12 Under 900: Co-champions were Brad Beagle of Flint, MI and Michael Dokken of Lakeville, MN with tied scores of 6.5 points.

K-12 Unrated: Levente Miklo of Ohio and Oliver Lombardi of Tobyhanna, PA were co-champs with tied scores of 6.5 points.
