Chess In the Media
On Saturday, local chess players converged on downtown Hickory to play a few friendly games - and to garner public attention in the process.
Hickory Hobby Shop and the Catawba Valley Community College Chess Club sponsored a double-elimination tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Games were played at eight shops on and around Union Square, so shoppers could witness the action.
“Chess is good for you!” shouted Jack Shaver, member of the Hickory/Lenoir-Rhyne Chess Club.
Fourteen-year-old Shiyam Thavandiran was about to face his greatest chess opponent ever, but he wasn't nervous.
That is, not until he found out that as Canadian junior champion, he'd have to play against senior champ Pascal Charbonneau on a $2,050 crystal set.
"He has so many accomplishments and he's one of the best in the world," said Shiyam of his opponent, who was at the Eaton Centre yesterday playing 30 games at once against some of the best amateurs in the GTA.
A passion for chess may be an inherited trait for male members of the Dorrance family.
Stirling Dorrance is chairman of the Nova Scotia Scholastic Chess Association, a non-profit association that promotes youth chess in the province.
Mr. Dorrance, who began to teach chess to his son Adam when he was just four, got involved with the association almost three years ago, when Adam began taking a serious interest in the game.
