Chess In the Media
Young chess club members from The Montessori Academy In The Oaks’ hope to capture their second national chess championship as they gear up for participation in Scholastic’s 2006 National Spring Championships, to be held April 7-9 in Louisville, Kentucky and April 21-23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Participants on the Montessori team range from the kindergarten level to fifth-grade and compete against other students across the nation by age bracket.
The 23-student club brought home top honors at the 2003 National Championships, placed third out of 38 teams at last year’s state competition in Terre Haute, and has won four state and numerous regional titles over the past 15 years.
Black and white chess pieces cast long shadows on the board as Stanwood High School juniors Jeff Ryba and Sam Losee cast long looks, trying to determine their next moves.
"I feel like threatening you again," said Losee, 16.
In a quick arc, he swept his king within range of Ryba's queen, catching him off guard.
Harry Kyriazes was almost giddy with joy Tuesday as he described how members of his Niles North High School chess team felt, more than a week after storming through opposing school teams to win the 2006 Illinois High School Chess Championship.
"We're on Cloud 9 right now," said Kyriazes, known as Coach K to team and chess club members. "We've got the fever."
Deservedly so, since this was the school's first ever state chess championship.
