Americans Prominant on FIDE Rating Lists

FIDE recently released their January 2005 rating list, and as always, several American players could be found among the leaders.

Five players from the United States earned places among the world's top 100 ratings, led by Alexander Onischuk (2652), ranked 47th. Yasser Seirawan (2631) is ranked 69th, just ahead of Gregory Kaidanov (2629) in 71st and Alexander Goldin (2628) in 73rd. Rounding out the group is US Champion Hikaru Nakamura (2613), in 99th.

Americans fared even better among top female players. Susan Polgar's return to competitive chess has placed her atop the list again, just four points ahead of China's Jun Xie with a 2577 raiting. IM Irina Krush (2466) is 17th, and fellow Olympiad teammate Anna Zatonskih (2435) is 29th.

Among juniors, only Nakamura is among the ratings leaders; he currently stands eigth among all players under age 21. However, several Americans are among the highest rated for players their ages, such as Jeffrey Haskel and Fabiano Caruana, who stand 3rd and 4th among players bornin 1992, respectively.

University of Texas at Dallas Wins Second Consecutive Pan-American Championship

For the first time, the 2004 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Championship was held in Wichita, KS and organized by the Anatoly Karpov Chess School (Mikhail Korenman, Director). 23 teams were represented the United States, Canada, and Peru.

The US Universities were - University of Texas at Dallas, University of Maryland at Baltimore County, Miami Dade College, Stanford University, Yale, Duke, Howard University, NYU, University of Chicago, Baruch College of NY, Rhodes College, Montgomery College, Emery University, and Kansas State University.

On 4th round Univeristy of Texas - Dallas won a championship match against the University of Maryland at Baltimore County and will keep the Championship title for the second year in a row. Four top US teams - UTD, UMBC, Miami Dade, and Stanford - qualified for the Final Four Presidential Cup that will be held in Lindsborg, KS in April, 2005.
