Stanley R. Crowe (1935-1995)
Stanley R. Crowe, a longtime USCF member from Newton, Massachusetts, died April 2, 1995 - one month before his 60th birthday. He was a charter member of the Framingham (Mass.) Chess Club, which evolved into the MetroWest Chess Club in Natick, Massachusetts, the biggest and most active chess club in New England. Five days before his death he had competed in the club's Kitchen Sink Thematics tournament, in which he tied for first place in the top section with an expert and a Class A player. Mr. Crowe was a solid Class B player for most of his chess-playing career. He had 14 career tournament victories at the MetroWest CC, which put him in the Top 10 among the club's tournament winners. He competed in several club championships. Born May 5, 1935 in Waltham, Massachusetts, Mr. Crowe graduated from Saint Charles High School in Waltham in 1953. He joined the National Guard right out of high school and became a staff sergeant. He met his wife, Evelyn, in 1955, and they married in 1958. In his youth, he was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and later coached Pop Warner football for about 20 years. He loved the outdoors, especially camping, canoeing and golfing. He was also a passionate gardener, enjoying growing tomatoes, grapes and flowers. He taught himself how to play guitar, accordion, harmonica and trumpet - with the latter being his favorite instrument. In addition, he was an avid reader and especially enjoyed science-fiction. He loved going to yard sales and buying used books by the bag. He also collected stamps and had a large collection. For a while, he dabbled in photography. Besides his wife, he leaves two children, Cathy and Allan, and six grandchildren. Obituary submitted by George Mirijanian, Publications Coordinator - Massachusetts Chess Association. Stanley R.
