A special event

On Monday, July 27th, the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) at Texas Tech University celebrated the opening of the TTU Chess Park, located between the Student Union Building and the University Library at 15th Street and Akron Avenue. A special thank you goes to Dr. Jim Brink, and many special thanks go to Sandia Construction for their donation of tables and construction costs.

More than 200 people, including the participants of the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls, were on hand to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony. University dignitaries such as Dr. Jim Brink, Associate Vice-Provost; Russell Thomasson, Special Assistant and Counsel to Chancellor Kent Hance; Grace Hernandez, Chief of Staff of TTU President Guy Bailey; former U.S. Ambassador Dr. Tibor Nagy; Dr. Bill Marcy; Mike Ellicott, Vice-Chancellor for facilities, planning and construction; and others were on hand for the special occasion.

In addition to bringing one’s own sets to play with, Texas Tech students can use their ID cards to check out chess sets from the information desk in the Student Union or at the University Library. There are seven total outdoor chess tables in the chess park, including one table with no benches that is handicap accessible.
