Jack Carleton Mallory

Jack Carleton Mallory, age 80, a native of Richmond, VA and a resident of Mobile, AL died on May 8, 2009. He was preceded in death by his daughter,Susan Turner Mallory, and is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sterlingurner Mallory and son John Carleton Mallory of Mobile.

Mr. Mallory received his Bachelor’s degree from Richmond College, Richmond, VA, where he lettered in track and was chess champion. He served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps where he was an instructor in biological warfare. Upon discharge from the Army he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Alabama where he received his Master’s degree in Ecology. While there he was a Graduate Assistant and a Teaching Fellow in the Biology Department. His fraternity was Phi Gamma Delta.

He served as Chief Marine Biologist for the Seafood Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation on Dauphin Island and later as Marine Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He worked for many years as an Ecologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until his retirement.

He was one of the founders of the Mobile/Baldwin County Scholastic Chess League and served as Director for 37 years. He was a certified Tournament Director and directed Chess Tournaments both locally and nationally. He had a passion for sailing and taught many youngsters to sail. He also volunteered for many years with the Regional Science Fair and the Environmental Studies Center.
