In round three of the World Chess Challenge match in Sofia, Bulgaria (February 16-28), Gata Kamsky calmed down with a round three draw. This time, Topalov chose a different but equally sharp line against the Grunfeld, 4. Qb3, the Russian variation. In game one, Topalov played the main line Exchange Variation. Gata was slightly worse throughout the game, but played well to give his rival little chance for the full point.

Gata's first attempt with the White pieces in this match was a disaster. Now he gets two Whites in a row, so Saturday and Monday's games will be key for his chances to claim a match victory.
